Christian Eriksen is almost certain to leave as a free agent once his contract expires in the summer, having been reduced to a bit-part role under . However, ex-Denmark international Thomas Gravesen fears the 32-year-old midfielder could choose to retire rather than continue his career elsewhere.
often utilised Eriksen after bringing him to Old Trafford on a free transfer in 2022, but it’s been a different story under Amorim.
The veteran playmaker has started just five times since his arrival in November, with just two of those starts coming in the Premier League.
Eriksen turns 33 next week, and Amorim is expected to focus some of his summer budget towards adding energy to his engine room, leaving no room.
But while Gravesen is convinced Eriksen’s United career is nearing an end, he has shared concerns about where his Danish compatriot will go next.
“It is 100 per cent over for Christian Eriksen at this summer, and I also fear that his career is over,” the former Real Madrid, Celtic and Everton man told .
“Where is he going to go? Where will he go and earn DKK 60m (£6.7m) a year? I have a very hard time seeing that. But now, it could be that he could settle for much less.

“Yes, he has probably earned the money he needs to, but I think that the development that Christian has undergone in the past few years is downward.
“It is sad to see the situation Christian Eriksen is in. He’s one of the players in Denmark who has given us the most. He has shone and been our best man, so it is sad if his career ends like this.”
Another of Gravesen’s compatriots and Eriksen’s international team-mate, Simon Kjaer, faced a similar situation when he left AC Milan in the summer.
The 35-year-old defender was out of contract but couldn’t find a club before deciding to hang up his boots in January.
Gravesen suggests Eriksen could suffer the same fate, adding: “He [Kjaer] left Milan, and suddenly, he was just gone.
“Half a year passed before he announced what happened. Christian Eriksen will turn 33 shortly, and I fear that history will repeat itself.”
Eriksen is set to be one of several exits in the summer as part of an aggressive squad reshaping led by Amorim.
Tom Heaton, Victor Lindelof, Tyrell Malacia, Casemiro, Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford are also expected to be among those who leave permanently.
