chiefs could be set to land another massive boost this week as The Open organisers consider granting the Saudi-backed tour official status.

The breakaway golf league has caused a split in the sport ever since it burst onto the scene four years ago.

There had been hope that golf’s civil war wouldn’t go on for much longer after it was announced the PGA Tour and LIV Golf had reached a “framework agreement” in 2023.

Negotiations remain ongoing between LIV and the relevant parties, but in the meantime, the golf league has scored some pretty significant wins of their own.

The latest could see the R&A go off the LIV rankings and ensure the field for The Open is as strong as possible.

That’s according to , who state that The Open organisers have shifted from their previous position that saw them ban the then LIV CEO Greg Norman from the 150th Open at St Andrews.

It’s been a big week for LIV, with the news from the R&A just one of several body blows it’s been able to land on golf’s ruling class.

Sky Sports hold somewhat of a stranglehold over golf coverage in the UK, but under the new agreement with ITV, 41 rounds from 41 tournaments of the league will be shown on terrestrial television.

Commenting on the move, director of ITV Sport Niall Sloane said: “This is an exciting time for LIV Golf as we look ahead to the innovative 2025 season. This partnership delivers free-to-air coverage for fans in the UK and we are delighted to welcome LIV Golf to ITV Sport.”

It comes during the same week the US Open became the first of golf’s four major championships to officially grant LIV Golf players exemptions based on rankings.

The top-ranked player from LIV who was not already exempt will directly earn a spot in the field for the 2025 US Open.

On top of that, the top 10 players in the LIV standings on 7 April will go straight into the final qualifying round, instead of having to go through the rigmarole of local qualifying.

Elsewhere, President met with PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan to discuss bringing an end to the ongoing LIV-PGA dispute.
