Here’s what you should know about B.C.’s trade with the U.S.

B.C. did over $50 billion in trade with U.S. states in 2023.

The recent threat of U.S. tariffs has put a spotlight on the trading relationship between B.C. and its southern neighbour.

B.C. did $54.8 billion in trade with U.S. states that year, including $15.6 billion with Alaska, California, Hawaii and Oregon. B.C. is Canada’s primary trade partner with these states, and the trade supported more than 270,000 jobs in B.C.

Here’s a closer look at what B.C.’s trade with the U.S. looks like, in charts and maps:

At $16.8 billion, Washington state was far and away B.C.’s biggest U.S. trading partner in 2023, followed by California and Oregon.

Over half of B.C.’s trade with the U.S. in 2023 — $27.4 billion — was with three states: California, Oregon and Washington.

The province also did $3 billion in trade with Illinois and another $2.2 billion with Texas, even though the province wasn’t among the top provincial trading partners with those states.

B.C. traded over $6 billion worth of food and vegetables with the U.S. in 2023 and nearly $8 billion in machinery and electrical equipment, highlighting the integrated nature of the B.C.-U.S. supply chain.
