Two men drown while ice fishing on lake near Agassiz

Police and search teams from Kent-Harrison, Mission and Chilliwack went to the lake and spotted two bodies beneath the ice.

Two men drowned Tuesday afternoon when they plunged through the ice on a lake northwest of Agassiz.

Agassiz RCMP were notified late that night that two men had gone ice fishing at Grace Lake and hadn’t returned home.

“A family member went to the location where the men were thought to be and noticed a large hole in the ice along with fishing gear, leading them to believe the men had fallen through the ice,” said Cpl. Chad Raymond of the Upper Fraser Valley RCMP detachment in a statement Wednesday.

Police and search teams from Kent-Harrison, Mission and Chilliwack went to the lake and spotted two bodies beneath the ice.

An RCMP underwater recovery team with expertise in diving, including ice diving, was called in and managed to safely retrieve the men’s bodies.

Police are working with the B.C. Coroners Service, but criminality is not considered a factor in the deaths.

“We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families and friends of the deceased during this difficult time,” said Raymond. “This tragedy serves as a stark reminder that ice conditions are constantly changing and even if you’ve tested the thickness, the weather and water conditions can make it unsafe.”
