The Edmonton Events List: Silver Skate turns Laurier Park into an outdoor art playground Feb. 7-17

Those of us who haven’t already bought land and fled to Florida forever are by now surely a hearty bunch, and here we have our third outdoor family festival of the year already — Edmonton’s longest-running one!

Silver Skate starts Friday at Laurier Park, celebrating its 35th anniversary with the conceptual The “Away” Project, in which large-scale art and design instalations will be made out recycled materials otherwise destined for the metaphorical Death Star trash compactor along the Folk Trail.

This will include a giant abstract whale, a mini mountain range and a house you can actually enter — costumed characters roaming about like (speaking of Florida) a Disney theme park 5 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. Fridays through Sundays of the fest’s 11-day run.

Beyond this are literally dozens of activities, including music, outdoor burns, snow sculptures, seasonally appropriate racing, Cabane à sucre, winter cinema, various craft workshops and pretty much anything else you can think of you might want to do in the snow — bring your skates if you want to join in.

Public skating starts at 11 a.m. daily, festival programming at noon on weekends, 4 p.m. during the week.

And yes, leashed dogs are allowed — BYOB (bags)!
