Brits looking to save money on by tackling projects themselves may want to think twice before picking up their tools.
Robert Quinton, DIY expert and director of , has warned homeowners about five crucial that should always be left to professionals, unless they want to risk costly damage, serious safety hazards, or major structural issues.
While DIY can save money, attempting certain home improvements without professional expertise can end up costing far more in repairs and damage.
Homeowners are urged to weigh up the risks before taking on complex projects, or risk turning a minor job into an expensive disaster.

1. Plumbing
While fixing a leaky tap or installing a new shower might seem straightforward, Quinton stressed that plumbing requires precision.
“Failing to properly seal a bathtub or shower can lead to significant leaks and costly water damage,” he explained.
Worse still, a poorly installed unstable bathtub could shift over time, causing structural problems that require major repairs.
2. Stripping Paint – Hidden Health Risks
Older homes, particularly those built before the 1970s, may have lead-based paint, making DIY paint stripping a hazardous task.
“Lead dust released during the stripping process can pose serious health risks, especially if inhaled or ingested,” Quinton warned.
Instead, he advised hiring professionals trained in lead-safe removal to ensure the job is done safely.

3. Fitting Appliances
Installing appliances like dishwashers, washing machines, or ovens involves dealing with both water and electricity, making it a risky job for untrained homeowners.
“One wrong move can lead to leaks, electrical hazards, or even fire risks,” said Quinton.
Professional installation ensures everything is fitted correctly and safely, preventing damage that could cost thousands in repairs.
4. Roof Repairs
Tempted to fix a loose tile or a leaking roof? Quinton strongly advises against it.
Roof repairs are one of the most dangerous home improvement tasks due to the risk of serious injury from falls.
“Even small mistakes can lead to worsening structural problems, causing leaks, damp, and costly damage,” he warns.
A professional roofer will address issues safely and effectively, without the danger of falling.
5. Knocking Down a Wall
Open-plan living is increasingly popular, but removing walls, especially load-bearing ones, is a job best left to experts.
“Taking down the wrong wall could cause ceilings, floors, or even entire sections of the house to collapse,” Quinton warned.
He estimated that hiring a professional costs between £1,250 and £1,750, depending on the size of the project, but this is a small price to pay for ensuring your home remains structurally sound.
