Squamish man pleads guilty in fatal hit-and-run
A Squamish man has pleaded guilty to a 2022 hit-and-run in downtown Squamish that killed a mother of two and injured another person.
A white pickup truck went out of control near Cleveland and Pemberton avenues on Sept. 2, 2022, flipped onto a sidewalk, hit two women sitting at the bus stop and crashed into a chain-link fence.
The women were pinned under the overturned truck. Bystanders helped lift the truck off the injured women.
Gurpreet Sangha, 44, died from her injuries several days later. The other woman suffered life-altering injuries.
The driver fled but was later arrested by Squamish RCMP. He was charged in November 2023.
On Jan. 23, John Cernos pleaded guilty to impaired driving causing bodily harm, impaired driving causing death, and failing to remain at the scene of a collision.
Cernos’ sentencing hearing is scheduled for June 10 in North Vancouver provincial court.
Okanagan police search for man wanted for assault
Police in the Okanagan are asking the public for help in finding a man wanted for assault.
Troy Killingbeck, 48, is wanted for assault with a weapon, uttering threats, obstructing police, fraud and theft, said Vernon North Okanagan RCMP.
He is described as 6 foot 1 inches, about 200 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes.
Anyone with information on Killingbeck’s whereabouts are asked to contact their local police detachment or anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).
