In a White House press conference, President Trump announced that the USA should seize control of Gaza and permanently displace its population.

Speaking alongside Binyamin Netanyahu in the Oval Office, Trump doubled down on his comments last week that Palestinians should leave Gaza in order to “just clean out the territory.”

Trump also added that he did not rule out the use of US troops to carry out his plans and did not reply when asked by journalists under what authority the United States could take over Gaza.

In terms of response, Republicans gave a mixed reply as some praised the idea while others criticized the use of American funds to redevelop the Gaza Strip.

Riyad Mansour appeared to reject Trump’s proposal entirely. He said: “Our homeland is our homeland. If part of it is destroyed, the Gaza Strip, the Palestinian people selected the choice to return to it.”

Trump’s proposal came after an hours-long meeting with Netanyahu, and he suggested that Palestinians could be moved to homes in other Arab nations.

Over two million people currently live in the Gaza Strip, and the territory measures 141 square miles, bordering and Egypt. Much of the land lies in ruins after the chaotic fighting and bombardments, which killed an estimated 47,000 residents.

The war was sparked by a Hamas terror attack on in October 2023, where 250 hostages were taken and around 1,200 people were killed.
