are at serious risk of losing after falling emphatically short of the club captain’s public demands this season. Fernandes signed a new contract at Old Trafford until July 2027 in the summer, dispelling growing rumours of an exit for a new challenge.
The 30-year-old has been United’s talisman since the moment he stepped through the door in a £47million move from Sporting in January 2020.
Fernandes has scored 88 goals and provided 77 assists in 268 appearances, lifting the Carabao Cup and FA Cup in the last two years.
However, United’s continued failure to match his lofty standards sparked exit speculation last year amid interest from different countries, including Saudi Arabia and Italy.
The Red Devils finished a record-low eighth in the and crashed out of the Champions League group stage, winning just one of their six games.
And Fernandes publicly suggested that while he wanted to stay in Manchester, the club had to align with his ambitions of winning the biggest honours.
“I just want my expectations to fit with the expectations of the club. If you go talk to any fan, they will tell you the same thing,” Fernandes penned for last May.
“We want to compete for the league. We want to be playing Champions League football. We want to be in cup finals. That is the standard. That is what I want. That is what you all deserve.”

A few months later, Fernandes ended transfer links by agreeing on a one-year contract extension until 2027, with the option of a further year.
However, the Portuguese maestro again used it as an opportunity to indicate that United had to match his expectations.
He said: “But I wouldn’t have signed this contract if I didn’t believe that my best moments in a United shirt are still to come.
“From my discussions with the football leadership and manager, it is clear how determined everyone is to fight for major trophies in the years ahead.”
United have done the opposite throughout the six months since Fernandes’ comments and will likely face the consequences.
‘s side may be in the Europa League last 16, but they are also rotting in 13th in the with eight wins and 11 losses after 24 games.
Fernandes turns 31 this year, so his value is already depreciating, and with United reportedly willing to listen to all offers for senior players, suitors should test their resolve this summer.
It would be no surprise whatsoever if the Red Devils’ No. 8 turned around and accepted that he has achieved all he can at the club.
