Liam Payne’s girlfriend Kate Cassidy has confirmed the real reason why she left him on his own in Argentina.
The former One Direction singer died on October 16 after falling from a hotel room balcony in the countries capital Buenos Aries, just two days after Kate had departed. She confirmed that she had to go home to take care of the couple’s dog.
“Obviously if I knew, if I could see into the future, I would never have left Argentina,” she said. “I had a responsibility, we had a responsibility. We had our dog and obviously I never, ever thought this event would occur.
“It was a tragic accident and no, I never did think (he might die young). But, you know, we did have our own separate lives — this wasn’t the first time we have travelled separately.
“I just never thought this would have happened, that it would turn out the way it did. It still doesn’t feel fully real for me that he’s not here,” she tearfully told in her first interview since his death.
Revealing how she heard of his death she said a friend of Liam’s had called her to break the news, and admitted she was relieved she hadn’t learned of it through social media.
Poignantly she shared that her last text to him and simply been about Halloween decorations as she told him how excited she was for him to see their home when he returned.
Describing it as “so mundane and normal” she said it was when the man who had helped her fix the lights text her days later asking if her boyfriend had liked his Halloween surprise that the reality he was gone hit her.
Her last photo of Liam was taken on her final morning in Argentina when they went riding and shows him on horseback. She described him as looking “so happy” in the shot.
