TV’s beloved architect George Clarke, famed for his magical home transformations on screen, has worked his own brand of magic on his personal residence.
Clarke has hosted numerous TV shows including Amazing Spaces and Ugly House to Lovely House, Channel 4 series titled George Clarke’s Old House, New Home and his new series George Clarke’s Remarkable Renovations.
He’s back on with George Clarke’s Building Home, which sees him meet people who are taking on challenging huge builds for powerful emotional reasons, from being drawn back to an area that they’ve always loved or a place with strong family memories to taking on a house that’s close to their heart.
The new four-part series airs at 9pm on Wednesday night (February 5) with married couple Chris and Ellie building a home in Lancashire’s beautiful Ribble Valley.
The Channel 4 celebrity resides in a breathtaking West London property, which he personally revamped to perfection.
Acquiring a quintessential 1960s Notting Hill house in 2015, he undertook a complete overhaul of the expansive home. George infused the space with a contemporary yet elegant aesthetic, peppered with whimsical touches that pay homage to his design prowess.
George has an incredible wooden office with shelves stacked with books and architectural designs
George shares this opulent home with his partner and opera singer Florence Hvorostovsky and his children.
The house features a bespoke office adorned with shelves laden with books, photographs, and architectural plans occupying every nook. George, an avid reader, once expressed his passion for books: “Books. Reading is one of my escapes. My daughter the other day said, ‘Dad, you’ve got to get rid of some of your books’.
“You can’t see my coffee table anymore because it’s stacked, 10 books high, over the whole thing. If I carry on, soon I won’t be able to see the TV! “
This luxurious abode is a designer’s dream, complete with a secluded garden studio that George has previously gushed about to the Daily Mail: “This studio, which I built in my garden after buying my house three years ago, is where I escape to read and write. It’s so peaceful except for the rumble of the Tube going past, but I love that.”
He also fondly compared his 1960s home to his mother’s estate in Sunderland, albeit with a significantly higher price tag. The studio’s rooftop features artificial grass, blending seamlessly into its surroundings, and a skylight offering a glimpse of the sky above.
George Clarke lives in a stunning home in West London
George has kept certain aspects of his home private, but has expressed his passion for home design, telling House Beautiful: “Your home is the most important piece of architecture in your life, the extended member of the family.”
“It affects how you socialise with your partner or kids and friends. It’s also your retreat and your personal space.”
‘I absolutely love my house’, George said
“I absolutely love my house. It’s a 1960s house in West London that I refurbished a number of years ago, so quite contemporary but, at the same time, very homely.”
He’s opened up about the luxurious touches within his abode, such as his cherished black Eames lounge chair and ottoman. He once shared: “I bought it about 20 years ago. It’s in my living room and I never sit on it to watch TV. It’s my reading chair. I’d always dreamt of having an original.”
The TV star has an outbuilding with a grass roof to fit in with its natural surroundings
“I’d love to have a wine cellar. It would have to be a proper, really cool, beautifully designed wine cellar. That would be awesome.”
