BBC Amandaland viewers issue same complaint minutes into new series

BBC’s fresh comedy series Amandaland has sparked a similar viewer demand as Lucy Punch reprises her role as the high-strung mother, Amanda.

After the events of Motherland, she is seen grappling with the trials of raising teenagers post her move to South Harlesden in London following her divorce.

Amanda finds herself trading Waitrose for Tesco Metro and downsizing to a flat, much to her displeasure.

Upon encountering new school gates, Amanda wastes no time in familiarising herself with her new environment, quickly reuniting with her long-suffering ex-best friend Anne (portrayed by Philippa Dunne), who guides her through the ropes, informs her about the school’s infamous Clockwork Orange torture scene, and introduces her to the cool parents.

She swiftly gravitates towards lesbian parents Della (Siobhan McSweeney) and Fi (Rochenda Sandall), but their laid-back parenting style and free-spirited nature prove to be a culture shock for Amanda, who soon realises she’s slightly out of her depth, reports .

As if she doesn’t have enough on her plate, her mother Felicity (Joanna Lumley) is a constant presence in her life, adding to her challenges.

The spin-off welcomed back several original cast members from Motherland. However, viewers were quick to express that the should have simply produced another series of Motherland instead of launching a new show.

One fan expressed their disappointment on X, formerly Twitter, stating: “Nice to have some of the old crew back for #Amandaland and there were 2 or 3 really hilarious lines but slightly disappointing overall. Please. Bring back Motherland. #Motherland.”

Others echoed the same sentiment, with one commenting: “Enjoyable but I kinda wish they had just done another series of Motherland. #Amandaland #MotherLand.”

Another unhappy viewer tweeted: “This is rubbish, nowhere as good as Motherland #Amandaland.” A fan of Motherland confessed: “I loved #motherland so much. #Amandaland is not quite there.”

Meanwhile, another defended AmandaLand, pointing out that people are comparing it unfairly to Motherland: “#AmandaLand if it was a brand new series everyone would love it, it’s only because we are comparing it to motherland that it doesn’t quite match up.”

Amandaland airs on One and iPlayer.
