Chester has been recognised as one of the top ten most welcoming cities in the world for 2025, according to accommodation site Booking.com.

The Cheshire city is the only UK destination to feature on the 13th edition of the Traveller Reviews Awards., which includes locations in Thailand, Brazil, Italy and the USA.

Described as a “historic gem”, Chester is celebrated for its ability to transport visitors back in time.

Whether it’s exploring Roman ruins, taking scenic walks along the River Dee, or browsing charming independent shops, Chester offers a unique experience.

Booking.com commends the city’s enchanting mix of Roman, medieval, and Tudor architecture, all beautifully preserved within the city walls.

It praises to the city’s Roman amphitheatre, hailed as “the largest in Britain”, the iconic Chester Rows, the city’s 11th-century cathedral with its stunning Gothic architecture.

The entry also notes Chester’s significant role during the English Civil War, with key battles fought nearby.

As visitors wander through its cobbled streets, they can discover layers of history, from ancient fortifications to the elegant timber-framed buildings of the Tudor period, reports .

Booking.com highlights Chester’s convenient location, just a 45-minute drive from the cities of Manchester and Liverpool and little over two hours on the train from London, making it an accessible destination for international visitors.

Three other European cities made the top ten: Cazorla in Spain, Orvieto in Italy and Quedlinburg in Germany.

Cazorla has been picturesque described as a “picturesque town in the south of Spain where history and charm come together”. Orvieto received accolades as a “hidden gem perfect for those seeking a blend of culture, history, and the authentic Italian ‘dolce vita'”.

Meanwhile, Germany’s Quedlinburg earned plaudits for its “tranquil atmosphere perfect for exploration.”
