Princess Anne’s two-word nickname for King Charles as she’s dubbed ‘most reliable ally’

‘s affectionate nickname for highlights just how close the royal siblings are. In a documentary based on Charles’ Coronation in 2023, the Princess Royal was heard playfully referring to the 76-year-old as an “old bean”.

The King, clearly amused by the moniker, was seen chuckling before kissing Anne’s hand. Known for her forthright nature, the 74-year-old is said to be the person Charles turns to for honest advice, both in his professional and personal life.

Following her recent comment that retirement isn’t an option for her, the King is said to have mixed emotions about her decision. While he “can’t bear” the idea of Anne feeling compelled to work amid his health concerns, he is simultaneously “overjoyed” that she continues to stand by him.

A royal aide told Woman’s Day Magazine: “Camilla might be the love of his life, but Anne’s his greatest and most reliable confidante.

“Anne’s the only one with the ability to tell him uncomfortable truths and pull him back from any emotional distractions.”

The source added: “Camilla’s in charge of his heart, but Anne has his head and is there for him.”

Last year, following a horse accident at her Gatcombe Park Estate, Princess Anne was hospitalised for five nights with minor injuries and concussion.

Nevertheless, she considers herself “jolly lucky” and has made a full return to her royal duties.

Following her harrowing experience, Princess Anne revealed she couldn’t recall any details of the incident, a situation that reportedly caused Prince Charles great concern.

Despite this, she has pledged to maintain her duties for as long as possible and has reportedly taken on even more responsibilities to support Charles and Princess Kate.

Last year, HELLO!’s Online Royal correspondent Danielle Stacey said: “The Princess Royal has always been a dedicated and hardworking member of the British monarchy, but purely from an observer’s point of view, it seems like her relationship with the King has deepened.

“Anne was given a starring role as the King’s Gold Stick-in-Waiting at his coronation and was seen greeting newly-crowned Charles back at Buckingham Palace with the words ‘Hello, old bean’.”

She added: “Despite having a heavy workload of her own, Anne has increased her engagements in recent months to support her brother and the Princess of Wales as they continue their respective cancer treatments.”
