70s comedy icon Brian Murphy has sadly died at the age of 92.

The actor was best known for his iconic roles in George and Mildred and Man About the House, in which he played George Roper.

He also appeared in everything from Last of the Summer Wine to The Catherine Tate Show.

Brian is survived by his Hi-de-Hi! star wife Linda Regan and their two sons. He and Linda tied the knot in 1995, after his previous marriage to Carol Gibson ended in divorce.

Brian died at his Kent home on Sunday morning (February 2). His friend and agent Thomas Bowington confirmed the news, describing Brian as a “joyful and profoundly good-hearted man” and paying tribute to his “talent and humanity”.

His wife Linda also spoke out, adding: “I was lucky to have in my lifetime found my soulmate. Brian who I will love forever.”

Brian was born in 1932 on the Isle of Wight, and started acting in the 1950s when he joined the Theatre Workshop founded by Joan Littlewood and Gerry Raffles. The star appeared in plenty of Shakespeare productions and acted in Littlewood’s one and only feature film, Sparrows Can’t Sing.

Fans have been paying tribute to the late star on social media, with one writing: “It’s curious that some actors representing characters can become familiar and likeable, not necessarily for the character, which is likely to be flawed, but from something intangible, familiar in the screen presence. Brian had that quality and is remembered.”
