Broccoli can be a controversial vegetable but tastes amazing when cooked properly
Broccoli is a great healthy food to add to your dinner as it is filled with vitamins and fibre, but if you do not like this vegetable there is a simple cooking technique to make it delicious.
Many people can be reluctant to eat broccoli if they have had it badly prepared in the past, as it can have a bitter taste and a horrible mushy texture if overcooked.
However, Erren Hart, a cook and founder of , has shared that an easy way to cook broccoli to make it mouthwatering is to simply roast it with three simple ingredients.
Erren said: “Roasted Fresh Broccoli with garlic, lemon, and Parmesan Cheese, this side dish is sure to be the Best Broccoli of Your Life!”
When broccoli is boiled it releases sulphur compounds which can give it an unpleasant taste and also make it less nutritious as vitamins C and B tend to leach out of the water when cooking.
The best way to cook broccoli is to roast it
:
Roasting broccoli causes the natural sugars in the vegetable to caramel, so you will get a rich, buttery and light sweet flavour that is also crispy in texture.
Erren said: “This simple, yet delicious twist on one of our favourite vegetables is the perfect side dish for almost any meal.
“I love this so much that I’ve started creating similar recipes with other vegetables.”
How to make broccoli taste better
You will need:
- 1.8kg of broccoli
- Two tablespoons of lemon juice
- Two teaspoons of grated lemon zest
- Four garlic cloves (peeled and sliced)
- Parmesan cheese
- Salt and pepper
- Olive oil
:
To begin, preheat the oven to 200C.
Wash the broccoli and make sure it is thoroughly dry before cooking it so it crisps up in the oven.
Cut the broccoli by separating the florets from any thick stalks. Leave an inch or two of stalks still attached to the florets and then get rid of the rest.
Sprinkle some cheese and lemon zest on top and your broccoli will be ready to serve
Place the broccoli into a large oven pan, making sure they are spread evenly in a single layer.
Drizzle the broccoli with five tablespoons of olive oil, season with salt and paper and also add the garlic cloves. Erren said: “Don’t skimp on the oil (even if it seems like a lot), season well, and make sure your oven is hot before adding the broccoli.”
Place the broccoli in the oven and roast for 20 to 25 minutes until crisp and the tips are brown. To make the broccoli even crispier, flip it halfway through cooking.
Once ready, take out the oven and immediately add the lemon zest, lemon juice and grated parmesan cheese.
Your tasty broccoli will then be ready to serve and is likely to be loved by all rather than being a forgotten side dish.
