BBC’s hit drama The Gold is set to make a triumphant return to television with its much-awaited second season later this year, following its debut series in January 2023.

The gripping factual drama draws inspiration from the notorious 1983 Brink’s-Mat heist and the cascade of events which followed it. Crafted by the award-winning writer of Neil Forsyth, the second series is directed by Patrick Harkins and produced by Charlie Leech.

The has unveiled a set of first-look images for the second season of The Gold, revealing that while many actors are reprising their roles, there’s also a host of new faces joining the cast.

Season one fan-favourites such as Hugh Bonneville as Brian Boyce, Charlotte Spencer as Nicki Jennings, Emun Elliott as Tony Brightwell, Tom Cullen as John Palmer, Stefanie Martini as Marnie Palmer, and Sam Spruell as Charlie Miller will grace TV screens once again.

The has teased season two, saying: “Following the conviction of some of those involved in the theft and handling of the Brink’s-Mat gold, the police realised that those criminals only ever had half of it. Series two explores what happened to the other half, and the criminal fortune it created.

“As the police investigation continues, it becomes a tense, high-stakes journey into international money laundering and organised crime, the police embark on a series of dramatic manhunts as they desperately try to solve the longest and most expensive investigation in the history of the Metropolitan Police.”

Neil Forsyth, the creator, writer and executive producer, commented: “The second and final part of The Gold sees the story of the Brink’s-Mat robbery, and everything that stemmed from it, become even more expansive, surprising and international.”

“It has been a real thrill for me to see the scripts brought to life so brilliantly by our director Patrick Harkins, our fantastic cast, and our hard-working crews in the UK and Spain. We are delighted with the results and look forward to the series launching later this year. “

The Gold season 2 will air on One and iPlayer later this year. Season one is available to stream on iPlayer now.
