Reese Witherspoon has revealed that a playful roast gone wrong ended her friendship with a fellow A-list actor. Speaking during a joint interview with her co-star Will Ferrell to promote their new film You’re Cordially Invited, the Big Little Lies star admitted the incident “literally haunts” her.
Recalling the awkward moment, the superstar shared that the unnamed actor had personally asked her to present an award at a “British, classy” and “elegant” event in her honour. However, unfamiliar with the tone of the ceremony, Witherspoon, 48, mistakenly assumed it would be more like a roast.
“So this friend of mine, who I didn’t really know that well but she was a very serious, proper actress, she asked me to give her an award,” Witherspoon explained to PEOPLE. “I got up and roasted her,” she admitted, adding: “I was like, ‘Remember the time we got laser hair removal?’ I’m still embarrassed about it.”
The actress went on to reveal that her jokes didn’t land with the audience—or her friend. “I thought it was so funny, and it was just, I had the wrong audience. It was pretty bad,” Witherspoon said. “Yeah. Not even kidding, she doesn’t talk to me anymore. Oh well.”

Witherspoon appeared to be taking the fallout in stride, though, as she quipped, “I’m not even kidding—we’re not friends anymore. I think she doesn’t like me anymore. But hey, it happens!”
The confession comes as Witherspoon stars in You’re Cordially Invited, a Prime Video comedy that follows two weddings accidentally booked at the same venue on the same day.
Her character, Margot, even delivers a cringeworthy speech in the film, mirroring the actress’s real-life mishap.
The movie, co-starring Ferrell, dropped on January 30 and has received mixed reviews, sitting at 44 per cent on Rotten Tomatoes.

The Cruel Intentions actress has since debunked speculation that Titanic star, 49, is the actress she is referring to in the podcast.
Rumours started after fans cited the Legally Blonde actress honored Winslet at the BAFTA/LA Cunard Britannia Awards in November 2007. Witherspoon took to her stories to address the rumors and reiterated that there is no bad blood between herself and Winslet.
“Hey guys .. just spoke to my very dear friend for years, Kate W. We laughed about this stupidity. Please do not believe the internet,” Witherspoon wrote according to People. “We are good friends and have never had any falling out.”
The mum-of-two also noted: “This is completely UNTRUE …so silly!”
