Murder charge laid in fatal Coquitlam pub stabbing

Timothy Vansnick, 32, has been charged with one count of second-degree murder, while another man has been released without charges

A 32-year-old man is facing a murder charge after a fight outside a Coquitlam pub led to a fatal stabbing.

Shortly after 9:30 p.m. on Jan. 31, Coquitlam RCMP were called to the John B Pub at 1000 Austin Ave.

By the time police arrived, bystanders were giving first aid and CPR to a man with life-threatening injuries. Despite their help and the efforts of first responders, a 35-year-old man died.

Two men who are thought to have been involved in the fight were arrested and are in custody. The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) continues to look into the incident with help from RCMP, and integrated forensics team and the B.C. Coroners Service.

On Saturday, the B.C. Prosecution Service approved a charge of second-degree murder against Timothy Vansnick. He is under a provincial court detention order until a court appearance on March 3.

Vansnick does not appear to have a record in B.C. beyond a few driving infractions.

The other man who was arrested has been released without charges while the investigation continues.

“We would like to thank the staff and patrons at the pub who rendered their assistance and did the right thing by co-operating with the police,” said Sgt. Freda Fong of IHIT. “Their quick thinking and willingness to help led to a swift arrest.”
