Tyrell Malacia is on the verge of joining PSV Eindhoven on loan from Man Utd
Manchester United left-back Tyrell Malacia is set to join PSV Eindhoven on loan for the rest of the season, according to reports.
The Dutchman was preparing to sign for Benfica over the weekend but that move collapsed late in the day due to differences over the loan fee and buy option. Malacia is even believed to have said goodbye to his team-mates, only to be left in limbo again.
United have been exploring loan destinations for Malacia since the start of the month, with manager preferring to use Diogo Dalot or Noussair Mazraoui on their weaker left sides than the 25-year-old, who only recently returned from a long-term injury.
And it now looks as though they have found one. Dutch news outlet claim that PSV ‘suddenly showed up’ after Malacia’s collapsed move to Benfica, and the player is now ‘actually on his way’ to the Netherlands.
PSV have a left-back vacancy to fill following Matteo Dams’ move to Al-Ahli. And Malacia is reportedly their top choice, with bags of Eredivisie experience on his CV after coming through the ranks at Feyenoord and spending five years in their first team.
Malacia has only started five games for United this season, and he has not played more than 45 minutes in a match since managing just over an hour against Viktoria Plzen in mid-December.
The Dutch international was the first signing of the era, making the move to Old Trafford for just under £15million in July 2022. Of the 47 appearances he has made since, 39 of them came in his debut campaign.
Malacia did not see any action whatsoever last term due to a devastating knee injury which sidelined him for well over a year. And Amorim is seemingly keen for a different profile of player to fill the left wing-back role in his 3-4-3 system.
The Red Devils have splashed £30million on Danish youngster Patrick Dorgu in the hope that he will be the long-term solution. Luke Shaw, who himself has been stifled by injuries in recent seasons, could play primarily as a left-sided centre-back once he returns.
United have flirted with signing a forward in the closing days of the transfer window. But so far their interest in Mathys Tel, Leon Bailey and Christopher Nkunku, among others, has not led to the attacking recruit Amorim desperately needs.
