GMB’s Susanna Reid leaves Labour MP desperately stuttering in furious clash

host didn’t hold back as she skewered MP Catherine McKinnell live on the programme.

During a debate about pensions, McKinnell was left stuttering as Susanna blasted her for previously campaigning on behalf of the women – and now claiming the government can’t afford to pay out.

Susanna said: “Now you’re saying, in government, we can’t afford to pay those women who you personally campaigned for. You’re saying you can’t afford to pay them.

“Because at the time, in 2016, you criticised Theresa May and you said, ‘The minister has basically confirmed this disgraceful discrimination is a price worth paying for deficit reduction.

“Haven’t you just done exactly the same thing to that group of women?” Susanna snapped.

McKinnell said: “I think the ombudsman report was, was, erm, quite clear that the vast majority of women didn’t suffer. And then the ability to actually process compensation, er, is, is outweighed by the challenges associated with doing so in a fair way.

“I think that as a government, some of the difficult choices we’ve had to make, they are choices that we never thought we would have to make. But, un-unfortunately we inherited a significant hole in the public finances-“

She was cut off by Susanna, who wondered: “Do you think WASPI women who might feel you’ve done exactly what the previous government did, and once you’ve got into government you’ve completely changed your tune. What are those conversations like with those women now, that you campaigned for before you came into government?”

The MP replied: “Look, I appreciate the situation is very difficult and we inherited a really difficult situation. I appreciate it’s challenging but we have to put the public finances on a stable footing.”
