Irish rocker and activist Bob Geldof gave President Donald Trump hell Sunday following the Toronto opening of the musical, Just for One Day, at Ed Mirvish theatre.
“It’s great that this is opening here now tonight on Sunday,” Geldof said from the stage after performers in the musical took their bows.
“Because as we all know (as of Tuesday) that bloated, orange fool is threatening this country with economic warfare with Canada. And be under no mistake that he’s making a very grave mistake indeed.”
Geldof later added disdain for Trump’s threatened tariffs on Mexico, Europe and China, too.
“(If he thinks) he can take on Mexico, Europe, Canada and China together, he is very delusional ladies and gentlemen,” said the frontman of the Boomtown Rats.

“Last week, for just 24 hours, this man withdrew all the life-saving medicines necessary for the poorest people of our planet.”
Just For One Day tells the story of how Geldof and others created the 1984 Ethiopian famine relief song, Do They Know It’s Christmas, which was recorded by an all-star cast of U.K. performers under the banner, Band Aid. It also looks at how the single turned into an 1985 all-star live event in London and Philadelphia known as Live Aid.
“It’s odd obviously and embarrassing to see a character (play you) on the stage — obviously, it’s a cartoon everybody can see that, he’s really s— at playing me, “ joked Geldof of actor-singer Craig Els, who portrays him in the musical.
“But it’s important. Pop music became important. Many things (can become) important if we want it to be something other than what it is. These people (on stage) make every night what we do important.”
Just For One Day runs until March 16.
