Joe Absolom’s early foray into acting began when he was merely a teenager. His first significant break came when he was cast in the popular ITV police drama The Bill in 1995.
He took on the role of a young, troubled character named Alex Callaghan, which quickly garnered him critical acclaim and paved the way for future opportunities in television.
However, it was his role as Al Large in the much-loved British series Doc Martin that truly propelled him into the limelight. Joining the show in 2004, Joe’s portrayal of the fun-loving, charming, and often mischievous character of Al made him a fan favourite.
His character, the nephew of Martin Clunes’ Dr. Martin Ellingham, became a key part of the show’s quirky and lovable ensemble cast.

The final straw for Joe came in 2013 when his London home was targeted by a gang of teenage burglars while his wife Liz was alone with their two eldest children and he was working on a project in Romania.
He downplayed the incident at the time, telling the Mirror: “We live in London, it happens.”

However, it had a profound impact on Liz, who “was really affected” by the break-in. This solidified Joe’s decision to relocate to Cornwall permanently.
Musical talent
Away from the world of acting, Joe has a lesser-known talent for music, with a particular fondness for playing the guitar. He often indulges in his passion for music through personal projects, playing for enjoyment or improvising with friends.
Joe is also a member of the band Hung Up and has even written his own songs.
