BBC Only Connect fans say same thing about ‘filthy’ Penny Mordaunt question

An answer on BBC’s Only Connect led to host Victoria Coren Mitchell branding it “filthy” before moving on leading to huge amusement from viewers of the quiz show.

The question, given to a team called The Introverts, linked and pop star Carly Rae Jepsen and the answer involved one person giving a sword to another.

“People were terribly impressed, weren’t they, carrying the sword,” Victoria said in reference to the former Secretary of State for Defence’s role in the Coronation of King Charles III.

In Carly’s case she was seemingly the receiver of swords from her fans after an online posting inspired them. However when Victoria explained the connection things took a turn.

“Somebody put on Tumblr they want to give Carly Ray Jepsen a sword. I like her and think she should have a sword’,” she told the team clarifying the link to the question.

“That never occured to me. Oh, my Lord!” Victoria exclaimed. “Well, what’s happened is people have given her inflatable swords.

“People turn up…but it now sounds filthy. Let’s move on,” she said hurrying proceedings on.

Taking to X fans shared their reaction to the answer. “Bradley and the euphemism. Brilliant. #onlyconnect,” one wrote.

“Not quite sure that ‘people were terribly impressed’ is the right description of ’s sword handling.Comedy GOT (Game of Thrones) character more like#OnlyConnect,” a second pondered.
