Madison Keys finally got her hands on a long-awaited Grand Slam trophy at the recent .

More than seven years after losing her first Major final, the 29-year-old went on an incredible run, beating and back-to-back to clinch the title.

One of Keys’ good friends, , has now shared exactly what the American did in the hours after being crowned the champion, revealing her celebrations were delayed by an anti-doping test.

Robson and Keys have been friends since they were children competing at the same under-12s tournaments. They later started training at the same academy, and even their mums formed a friendship.

The retired British player was in Melbourne Park working as a pundit, meaning she got to sit courtside to watch Keys lift her maiden Grand Slam title. And she remained on-site for the rest of the night, joining in with some of the American’s champagne celebrations.

Although she competed on the tour and peaked inside the world’s top 30, Robson has now admitted she had no idea just how many commitments a Grand Slam champion had – including an anti-doping test that threw a “spanner in the works”.

Talking through her night with Keys after the championship match, the 31-year-old said: “There were so many commitments.

“To be honest, I didn’t know that there were that many commitments because she went and did all the TV stuff straight away.

“Then she came back, then had anti-doping, which is just a spanner in the works, because you just don’t know how long it’s going to take you to need to go!

“And then had to do all the press conference and everything, so, yeah, I think we ended up leaving around 2 in the morning.”

Robson was busy covering the men’s singles final the following night when Keys and her team properly celebrated the victory.

“And then I missed the nice dinner, because she went to Nobu the night after and I was there for the men’s final,” she added. “So I got pictures. I didn’t get a nice champagne!”

Robson was there for the locker room champagne toast but, in true Keys fashion, the world No. 7 wasn’t keen on having a wild night out. “I get on really well with Bjorn and Kayla, her physio, so everyone was there,” Robson continued.

“Kayla was spraying champagne on her in the locker rooms. Again, like classic Maddi, she didn’t want to do anything. She wanted to go to bed. So, just certainly wouldn’t be my idea of a celebration, but it was very her.”

Robson also helped Keys choose her outfit for her trophy photoshoot at the Brighton Beach Boxes in Victoria.

The Brit explained: “She made it back to the locker rooms and there was a bunch of outfits in there that she tried on, that the tournament had organised.

“She didn’t end up going with one of those so it was the last-minute decision on the morning of but she was happy with it, she looked great.”
