Lily Collins’ husband addresses ‘unkind messages about surrogacy’ amid their daughter’s birth

Lily Collins’ husband, Charlie McDowell, has spoken out against those leaving “unkind messages” about the couple’s use of a surrogate.

On Instagram, he addressed the messages in the comment section of the joint post announcing the birth of their daughter, Tove Jane McDowell.

“Thank you for all the kind messages and love. We are overjoyed and very grateful,” he began.

“In regards to the unkind messages about surrogacy and our path to having a baby— it’s ok to not be an expert on surrogacy,” he said. “It’s ok to not know why someone might need a surrogate to have a child. It’s ok to not know the motivations of a surrogate regardless of what you assume. And it’s ok to spend less time spewing hateful words into the world, especially in regards to a beautiful baby girl who has brought a lot of love into people’s lives.

“That’s all for now because she just pooped and I need to change her diaper,” he continued.

Collins responded to her husband’s comment with three white heart emoji.

Collins and McDowell shared the news of their daughter’s birth via Instagram Jan. 31. In the post, the couple shared a photo of Tove and revealed that they used a surrogate.

“Welcome to the center of our world Tove Jane McDowell,” they said. “Words will never express our endless gratitude for our incredible surrogate and everyone who helped us along the way. We love you to the moon and back again…”

Collins and McDowell have been romantically linked since August 2019 when they went Instagram official. A year later, they got engaged. They tied the knot on Sept. 4, 2021.
