Cutting your lawn too soon will lead to dry patchy grass that will not be able to grow properly
She said: “Records from our citizen science project, Nature’s Calendar, over the last few years illustrate how the weather influences our grass-cutting habits.
“The Beast from the East in early 2018 brought widespread snow and low temperatures, delaying the average first lawn cut to six days after the benchmark year (2001).
“In contrast, a mild start to 2019 and 2020 resulted in early grass growth, with the average date being 21 and 18 days earlier than the benchmark year respectively.”
Therefore, the best time to start cutting your lawn according to the Nature Calender record will be in March, so gardeners can keep their mower in the shed for another month.
The best day to begin cutting grass will likely be around March 18, as lawns will be out of dormancy, and the ground will no longer be frozen.
The best time to mow the lawn in the UK will likely be around March 18
If you want to know the exact date to start cutting grass then look for signs of visible green growth on your lawn and also check the soil temperature is consistent at around 10C.
Before mowing, it is important to ensure that the ground is not overly wet as soggy ground can cause soil compaction, which limits how much nutrients, air, and water reaches the grass roots.
Lorienne said: “If the ground is too wet, the weight of the mower can damage the grass and compact the soil, making it harder for grass to establish healthy roots. If it’s been wet or you have heavy soil, wait for a few dry days to pass before mowing.”
If you wait a little longer to tidy up your lawn then the grass will be thicker, greener and much healthier throughout the year once we enter the warmer seasons.
