Barclays has issued an update to fuming customers that it is “taking longer” than expected to fix a major IT glitch that has locked people out of their accounts.

According to outage tracker Down Detector, hundreds of customers claim they are experiencing interrupted services and missing funds, with some saying they have had no for almost 24 hours.
In a message issued to customers on X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday morning, Barclays said: “We’re really sorry – we’re still working to fix the issues that started yesterday. This is taking longer than we’d like – thank you for bearing with us.
“You can: use your cards, withdraw cash. Some customers may be experiencing issues making payments – we’re working to fix this as soon as we can.
“Your balance may be incorrect and some payments you made or are expecting to receive may not show. Please do not make the payments again. Please bear with us while we correct this.
“As soon as we have another update, we’ll let you know here or search ‘Barclays service status’ online for real time updates. Thanks for bearing with us.”
Fuming customers are now reaching out to Barclays support on social media, with the bank issuing numerous apologies for the outage.
One X user wrote: “I’m unable to click into my accounts on the app yet your status website says it’s working? What is going on this is ridiculous.”
Another wrote: “Right I need to move money over to pay for things and I can’t so are you gonna pay all late fees ??? This is pathetic it’s been 24 hours.”
A third added: “I’m still unable to access my account. Is Barclays really still down after 24 hours? I signed up to your text alert service yesterday and still received no update. As a Premium customer, this is not even a basic level of service!”
Another frustrated user wrote: “First @Barclays block my bank for no reason, now I can’t transfer money into my bills account, what an absolute joke you are!!!!”

The Down Detector website has shown more than 1,600 reports of outages for Barclays banking services since Friday.
In a statement on Saturday, a Barclays spokesperson said: “We’re incredibly sorry for the ongoing technical issues that are impacting our customers’ accounts. Some may see an outdated balance, and payments made or received may not show. We’re working hard to fix this issue, and customers should not try to make the payment again.
“Customers can use their cards and withdraw cash, and as soon as these remaining issues are resolved, we’ll let our customers know. We will ensure that no impacted customer is left out of pocket.”
