have explored the possibility of putting together a loan move for Wolfsburg winger Patrick Wimmer.

The Austrian international has contributed to five goals in the Bundesliga this season and his performances have attracted attention from a handful of clubs in Europe. Wimmer has two-and-a-half years left to run on his Wolfsburg deal but the German club’s resolve could be tested ahead of the winter transfer deadline.

Leicester are among the interested parties and have held discussions over taking Wimmer on loan until the end of the season. However, Express Sport understands that Wolfsburg would rather keep him, and only a sizable offer would sway them towards a permanent deal.

Wimmer is a prominent player in Ralph Hasenhuttl’s squad and the former Southampton boss is reluctant to lose him midway through the season. AC Milan have also shown interest in the winger, but they too are reluctant to put enough cash on the table for a permanent transfer.

Juventus have Wimmer on a list of targets should they press ahead with plans to bolster their options out wide.

It is unclear whether Leicester will revisit their interest in Wimmer over the coming days or risk waiting until the summer. Finances are tight at the King Power Stadium and man Woyo Coulibaly is the only permanent signing they have made so far in this window.

The Foxes have only recently been given a clean bill of financial health by the after submitting their PSR assessment for the 2023/24 season. And club chiefs have been unable to fully back Ruud van Nistelrooy in the market.

Wimmer, who plays primarily on the right side of midfield, would provide competition for the likes of Jordan Ayew and Facundo Buonanotte if Leicester swoop, but it is deemed more likely that he stays put until the summer. The former Austria Wien and Arminia Bielefeld star can also play up top, on the left or in the No. 10 role.

Speaking ahead of Saturday’s crunch relegation clash against Everton at Goodison Park, Van Nistelrooy insisted that senior figures at the King Power will keep working until the deadline to try and improve the squad.

“We are still working on a couple of things, we know it’s the deadline and what you’re working towards,” he said. “It’s something we’re going to address until the last second of the window and see what we can do. Until Monday we can close it and look back on it.”
