Jacob Fearnley spearheads Team GB assault with important Davis Cup win

Jacob Fearnley had an unforgettable Davis Cup debut, levelling the playing field for Great Britain against Japan at the end of the first day. With key players and Cameron Norrie absent from the first qualification round, 23-year-old Fearnley stepped up as the top-ranked British player.

Coming off a strong performance at the , reaching the third round, Fearnley showcased his mettle by defeating former grand slam finalist Kei Nishikori with a convincing 6-3 6-3 victory. This triumph was crucial after Billy Harris fell in the opening rubber to Yoshihito Nishioka, losing 7-5 6-1.

Overwhelmed with his performance, Fearnley commented: “I am feeling great, I was extremely nervous before the match, as to be expected, it is my first Davis Cup match and playing such a great player I knew I had to play good.

“I was a bit nervous but I ended up playing a great match so I am happy.

“I know it is going to be another big challenge tomorrow.”

He expressed his pride not only in himself but in the team, acknowledging the support from coach Leon Smith: “I am extremely proud of myself, but also proud of the team. I wouldn’t be here if Leon (Smith, coach) didn’t have support in me.”

The best-of-five tie’s fate will be sealed on Saturday, featuring a doubles match followed by two additional singles encounters to determine the contestant progressing to the second qualifying round in September.
