Is that the sound of a sizzling wok? Yes, but more than this, that hissing is the sound of the Year of the Snake upon us — and a good number of events are celebrating this Lunar New Year around town!
With 35 local vendors — think Oddbird in Chinatown — Togather Chinatown Arts Market is happening Saturday and Sunday over at Edmonton Multicultural Centre (9540 102 Ave.).
Family-friendly games and activities, awesome costumes and lion dancing and an expanded Chinatown food court, including delicious Fu’s, are literally on the menu.
Meanwhile, over at Kingsway Mall, the Chinese Graduates Association of Alberta is having its own Lunar New Year celebrations with its own lion dance parade, accompanied by the sound of drums, cymbals and gongs. This starts at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, down by Starbucks on the main level.
Music ensembles, interactive games, martial arts demonstrations and various cultural arts and crafts displays are also on deck, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. all over the mall, including in the HyperPOP zone upstairs by The Bay.
