It’s a constant part of everyday life: digging under the sink through bottle after bottle of expensive cleaning spray, each one designed to do one specific task in your , , or around the house.

But though branded cleaning sprays are useful, they’re often expensive, costing up to £5 or more per bottle for just a few hundred ml of product, and they’re also packed with chemicals.

Households are being told that, instead of packing cupboards with bottle after bottle of very specific cleaning sprays, you can simply make your own all-purpose disinfectant for less.

Not only will your home-made mix contain no harsh chemicals, it will also be cheaper and can be used around the house for all sorts of things – while being better for the planet too.

Christine Liu, writing in her book Sustainable Home, advises households that you don’t need to keep spending money on packaged cleaning products and in fact, it’s cheap and easy to make your own at home without any harmful added chemicals.

She said: “Cleaning your home can be done simply and sustainably with just a few natural ingredients.

“The following can be bought at a fraction of the price of commercial cleaning products and when combined, make for great cleaning tools to be used throughout the home.

“A simple cleaning spray can be made with water, and essential oil (if you’d like to add a scent).

“Use this all-purpose cleaning spray to wipe down dirty counters, kill bacteria, scrub the toilet and clean windows or glass.

“Repurpose an old spray bottle package from a previously used product, or there are plenty of glass bottle options available for purchase online.”

To make your own cleaning spray, mix 150ml of water with 150ml of vinegar. Then add an essential oil of your choice and put in a container.

Vinegar acts as a natural disinfectant, killing germs on contact.
