Money expert Steph McGovern has come out to share her best money-saving tips, with the finance guru warning that Brits that they could when washing your clothes.

Many of us stick a load of washing in whenever we remember and usually with little planning, but doing so could be hurting your bank account more than you think.

Washing machines are one of the requiring lots of energy to not only heat the water but whizz your clothes around. According to the Energy Saving Trust, doing the laundry accounts for around 14 per cent of our energy bill, with the simple technique helping to bring that down – and we don’t just mean washing the clothes at a cooler temperature (try 30C if you can).

If you’re signed up for an energy rewards scheme you may be able to save some cash when putting a load on late in the evening, or early in the morning.

Most modern washing machines have built-in delays and timers, allowing you to schedule your laundry to come on first-thing during quieter periods.

Steph suggests that if you’re signed up to a scheme you only start operating the machine when this off-peak energy comes into effect – between 8am and 10pm, making a particular effort to avoid doing the washing between 4pm and 7pm as electricity suppliers usually  during peak times of day when energy usage is at its highest.

Although many of us have been slow to clock onto the technique, according to Dr.Beckmann a staggering 85per cent of us are missing out on this trick and doing our washing during the most expensive times.

Although they have warned you not to put the machines on while you sound asleep. Dr. Beckmann spokesperson, Chloe Baker said: “With households struggling with the cost-of-living crisis, a simple change like switching to the magic hour can make a real difference to your energy bills.

“We’ve highlighted this hour as 7am to 8am, as we’d never recommend putting a load on before heading to bed, due to health and safety. This ‘magic hour’ provides you with enough time to fill and empty your washing machine before heading out to work or for the school run.”

McGovern has also suggested an update in your appliances may save some pounds off your bill. McGovern working with Smart Energy GB said: “If an old appliance has come to the end of its life, check the energy efficiency rating of any replacements and choose the most efficient you can. The extra investment will soon pay for itself.”

She also said that signing up for an energy rewards scheme could double down on the savings, with 87 per cent of people who signed up for the rewards feeling like they’re saving money on their bill.
