The highly anticipated third season of the South Korean sensation, Squid Game, is set to conclude later this year, leaving millions of fans eagerly awaiting its final instalment.
The second part of the riveting saga was unveiled to subscribers on Boxing Day last year, plunging former champion Seong Gi-hun (portrayed by Lee Jung-jae) into another series of lethal trials.
However, the stakes escalated as Gi-hun’s rebellion ended disastrously when the Front Man Hwang In-ho (Lee Byung-hun), who had been masquerading as a player named Oh Young-il, resumed his role as the game’s puppeteer.
After witnessing the murder of his friend Park Jung-bae (Lee Seo-hwan), viewers were left speculating if Gi-hun could be next.
Or, does the Front Man have an even more horrific fate in store for Player 456 in the upcoming series of challenges?
The Front Man is back in command
A suspense-filled clip previewed during the streamer’s Next on line-up for 2025 this week has offered some clues.
The scene reveals that the remaining players are proceeding with the next challenge despite the unsuccessful revolt and are choosing a blue or pink ball from a dispenser in a new arena.
The players are then divided into two teams, gearing up for an unknown game that will inevitably result in another massacre.
Jang Geum-ja (Kang Ae-shim) and Park Yong-sik (Yang Dong-geun) are separated. However, Geum-ja hints at their potential survival, stating they’re yet to understand the game’s rules.
Gi-hun was allowed to live for the next series of games
As all players assume their positions, the crowd reveals that Gi-hun is alive and set to participate in the next round. The clip concludes with him taking the final ball, leaving viewers in suspense until the third and final season premieres on this June.
First-look images from the upcoming season also confirm Gi-hun’s survival, showing him bloodied and handcuffed to a bed in the dormitory, possibly under the watchful eye of the Front Man.
While fans will be relieved that Gi-hun survived his encounter with the Front Man, several mysteries remain to be solved when the third season releases this summer.
The Front Man, also known as In-ho, didn’t appear in the scene after faking the death of his alias Young-il.
Can the brutal tournament finally be shut down?
Furthermore, Gi-hun seems no closer to reuniting with police officer Hwang Jun-ho (Wi Ha-joon) with whom he planned to end the games.
With an American adaptation in progress, it remains to be seen whether Gi-hun will succeed in ending the gruesome tournament or if this is just the start of Squid Game’s global reign of terror.
Squid Game season 3 premieres Friday, June 27 on .
