Mythic Quest season 4 features cast’s ‘favourite episode’ inspired by The Traitors

Mythic Quest has finally returned to Apple TV+ for its fourth season and the stakes are higher than ever.

Although game developers Ian Grimm (played by Rob McElhenney) and Poppy Li (Charlotte Nicdao) are back at the helm, the team are scrambling for ideas as their pandemic profits are starting to dwindle.

While executive producer David Brittlesbee (David Hornsby) works with head of monetisation Rachel Mayee (Ashly Burch) to get the company back on track, Dana Bryant (Imani Hakim) strikes up an alliance with Brad Bakshi (Danny Pudi) to develop her own ideas.

However, the first two episodes of the new season, which premiered this Wednesday (29th January), have thrown a spanner in the works as Poppy finds herself in a relationship for the first time ever with new boyfriend Storm (Chase Yi).

The latest instalment of Mythic Quest has been hailed as the show’s ‘best season yet’, and Screen Time got the chance to chat exclusively with the cast about some of the upcoming episodes.

One of the biggest highlights of this year’s outing is a lavish murder mystery episode which sees the cast at their very best while delivering some incredible gags and jaw-dropping surprises along the way.

“It was so much fun!” Hakim said. “We had this joke that we got to do this all day on set,” she added, showing off a jazzy dance move with her co-star Pudi.

“Everybody just looked so good and fine. The hair was slick. I hope we get to do more episodes with a departure from just being in the workplace. Maybe a musical or something! It was just really fun to mix it up a bit.”

Pudi recalled: “I told Megan Ganz, who directed the episode, ‘This may be one of my favourite episodes of anything I’ve ever done’. It’s such a sweet departure but it’s still anchored by this wonderful character growth and moments in our show that I think are very important.”

High praise indeed considering Pudi previously starred in Community, which features some of the best genre-bending episodes in sitcom history.

“So, that is the beauty of that episode,” he added. “But for people who just pop in, it’s such a fun one-off episode. I’m watching Traitors right now and I can’t stop trying to figure out who’s lying and who’s not lying!

“It was fun to have a cocktail, have an Old Fashioned, be dressed in my slick zoot suit and just pose in a corner and be mysterious and nefarious. Everybody wants to do that!”

Explaining the thoughts behind the episode, star and writer Burch remembered: “I think we were talking about, it would be fun for them to have a game night of some kind.”

Creator Ganz chimed in: “Yeah, I think it came out of the idea that Ian would want to mess with Storm, and so we were like ‘It might be fun to do a game night where Ian messes with Storm and pretends like he’s not but obviously he’s jealous’.”

“Megan loves puzzles, escape rooms, Agatha Christie,” Burch added. “It was just the perfect episode for her to co-write and direct. It was such a difficult episode to break because it turns out writing a murder mystery is hard! How did Agatha Christie write so many?”

Ganz teased: “We knew that it was going to be fun from a character perspective, but we really wanted to hold up the murder mystery part of it and keep people guessing until the end. So we really had to write it in such a way that people didn’t see the end coming and hopefully they don’t.”

Nicdao agreed: “That episode was so much fun to shoot.”

And Hornsby added: “It’s fun to put ourselves in a new environment with these stakes that seem a little heightened even for our show, these sort of fun, faux stakes.

“It was really fun to get out of the office and into a completely different environment. And who doesn’t want to be part of a Glass Onion-type mystery?”

The Mythic Quest team certainly pulled off a satisfying puzzle box of an episode worthy of Benoit Blanc that fans can witness for themselves in just a few weeks’ time.

Mythic Quest season 4 continues Wednesdays on Apple TV+.
