An IKEA shopper has shared the impressive dupe she made of a designer table using an unconventional item – salad bowls.
Achieving your ideal can be quite the challenge, especially as the cost of living crisis rages on and more and more products seem to be increasing in price.
For people craving a , it can be especially difficult to attain due to the hefty price tags associated with some brands and pieces. One savvy woman seems to have gotten around this by creating an impressive dupe of a designer console table she wanted but couldn’t afford because it was £10,000.
She didn’t specify the exact table, but the NONO Elefante Console Table 57 is very similar to the design she opted to create. It’s crafted in solid wood and is available via luxury online marketplace for £10,869.74.
Similarly, there’s the FORM(LA) Palla Console Table which is completed with Calacatta Viola Marble and is available from the retailer for £12,211.35. It too boasts the same spherical balls for legs, as well as a wavy top.
Instead, TikTok creator Cassandra Noel opted for DIY and shared the process in a popular video on the hit platform. She ventured to IKEA where she purchased eight wooden salad bowls so she could join them together to create four spheres.
The bowls were paired up and glued together to create the spherical shape, with the crease then being filled by wood filler.
As they were drying, she used an extra bowl as a template to draw the “perfect squiggly shape” onto a plank of wood that was to serve as the tabletop. She then used a jig-saw to cut the shape out of the wood.
After that, she sanded everything down so it would be ready to stain. In a voiceover, she added: “My number one advice when staining is do not sleep on pre-stain conditioner, it just makes the finished product look a little bit more polished.”
She “drenched” the table components in the conditioner, then stained it with a dark wood stain to give it a “rich, warm, brown colour with a cosy vibe”. She did two coats then “wiped the excess off with a rag to give it the marbly texture” she desired.
The final step was using a setting spray to help protect it and ensure it remained free from scratches. The next day, she glued the spheres together – one on top of the other – to serve as the two table legs, one for each end of the console table.
She then added the table top and finished with some styling accessories to complete the look. Cassandra said: “I am so happy with the results – I’m still in shock that I made this.”
Fellow TikTok users shared their thoughts in the comments section. One person said: “So sick, I would 100% buy this if you produced more!”
Another said: “Best DIY I’ve seen all year, it’s stunning” while a third commented: “Looks so expensive!! Love a DIY – you killed it”.
