has jokingly called out after the golf star required surgery on a hand injury he picked up over the Christmas break.
Scheffler is gearing up for his first appearance of the year at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am having been out of action for the best part of a month.
The injury came during Scheffler’s Christmas Dinner preparations, with the American having .
McIlroy wasn’t having any of it though, as the Northern Irishman – tongue firmly in cheek – dug out Scheffler in the lead-up to this week’s Pro-Am event in California.
Commenting on his counterpart’s freak injury, McIlroy said: “I think he made enough money to hire a chef. It’s like why are you cooking yourself?”
McIlroy, not impressed with the reason Scheffler had to go under the knife, added: “I was hoping it was going to be a bit of a more fun story than that.”

“Firstly was just concerned and hope he’s okay. It sounds like he’s up and it’s good that he’s teeing it up this week. But yeah, just get a chef.”
Scheffler was quizzed on McIlroy’s own suggestion during his own pre-tournament press conference, responding with: “I’ve got a chef, her name’s Meredith. She’s pretty cute,” he joked, making reference to his wife.
Explaining how the injury occurred, the reigning Masters champion added: “You’ve got to roll the dough and you’ve got to cut the dough, but we were at a rental house so we didn’t have like the right tools and the only thing there was a wine glass that we found.

“I had my hand on top of it and it broke, which side note, I’ve heard nothing but horror stories since this happened about wine glasses, so be careful. Even if you’re like me and you don’t drink wine, you’ve got to be real careful with wine glasses.
“Yeah, it broke and the stem kind of got me in the hand. So it’s one of those deals where like it’s truly — I can’t live in a bubble, like got to live my life and accidents happen. You know, it could have been a lot worse.”
Scheffler will be hoping his hand is back in full working order when he tees off at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro Am on Thursday morning.
