Cynthia Erivo may be casting spells with her performance in the movie “Wicked,” but fans are still finding ways to take her by surprise.
Taking a brief break from the enchanted land of Oz, Erivo visited “Jimmy Kimmel Live” on Tuesday. During the segment, Kimmel asked about the actor’s legendary “war cry” riff from the film’s hit song, “Defying Gravity.” Kimmel was curious if fans imitate the “war cry” at her.
Erivo’s response? “Yes. Randomly. When I don’t ask for it.”
“Do they intro it?” Kimmel asked. No, Erivo said — “Wicked” fans sometimes “go straight into” the song without a hint of warning.
She admitted that she is still trying to figure out how to react to these spontaneous outpourings of love.
“Sometimes it’s really delightful. Sometimes it’s really really wonderful,” she said. “I think what’s lovely is that people are willing to try anyway.”
The three-time Grammy winner confessed that while it’s a little bewitching when fans imitate her performance, she’s touched that their “emotion” is so powerful that they can’t help but burst into song without even introducing themselves.

Kimmel then asked if “Harriet” actor has ever been approached with her “war cry” in the bathroom, and Erivo responded, “No,” but stated she has been approached for a photo.
Erivo and her “Wicked” costar Ariana Grande are both up for Academy Awards, with the former now on track to potentially becoming the youngest recipient of an EGOT.
