Brexiteers could change the minds of Rejoiners by arguing Britain has yet to take advantage of the opportunities of its EU exit, according to a leading pollster.

Professor Sir John Curtice highlighted recent polling suggesting that, on average, 56% would vote to return to Brussels, while 44% would opt to stay out.

But he suggested those wanting to rejoin could be swayed by arguments that the UK has not yet capitalised on the full benefits of .

Writing in The Telegraph, he said: “Of course, polls are not always right (though it is often forgotten that a majority of those conducted during the EU referendum campaign had Leave ahead).

“And even if we are inclined to believe what they say about the position at present, the apparent lead for rejoining is not so large that it might not be overturned by an effective pro- campaign that convinced voters that, rather being a mistake, the country had as yet to seize the opportunities afforded by .

“Indeed, British Social Attitudes data suggest that scepticism about the EU is still widespread – nearly half of those who would vote to be part of the EU would like the institution to be less powerful than it is at present. That is potentially a rich seam for the pro- side to mine.”

The pollster’s comments come ahead of the fifth anniversary of this Friday.

Britons voted by 52% to 48% to leave the EU in the 2016 referendum.

The result led to years of wrangling between the UK and the bloc over a divorce deal before officially took place on January 31 2020.

Labour has pledged to build closer ties with Brussels but the have accused Sir of plotting to return Britain to the EU by the back door.

The Prime Minister has insisted he will not seek to rejoin the single market or customs union.
