BT broadband users warned about download speeds
If your broadband constantly feels sluggish there could be a very simple reason why. Millions of us return home each night after a long day at work, college or school and head straight to the internet to stream movies, play games or browse the web. It’s at this time when the web gets hammered and things can start to slow down.
“We’ve invested heavily in the network, so everyone gets a fast connection even at the busiest times,” explained in a post on its website.
“But similar to rush-hour traffic, the speed you’ll get depends partly on how many people are using the network. During peak periods, usually 8-10pm, you may sometimes notice slightly slower speeds.”
Ofcom also states that time of day plays a big factor in speeds, with the telecoms regulator stating that “Average download speeds can slow when broadband networks are busy. This is known as network congestion or contention.”
Before you start thinking you’ll have to wander up and down the road telling your neighbours to get off the web, there are some things you can try to boost your speeds.
Download speed
Firstly, if Full Fibre has been installed in your street, it’s a good idea to switch to this new technology and leave those old copper cables firmly behind.
Fibre can cope with much quicker downloads and is far more robust meaning you are much less likely to see any huge difference when the clock strikes 8pm. Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) isn’t usually any more expensive than copper and you could see a significant boost to your downloads. .
Next, it’s a good idea to leave your router switched on 24 hours a day as this will make sure things are running smoothly at all times.
“It’s important to make sure that you leave your Hub switched on and connected at all times. This will let us give you the fastest and most stable service, and ensure your hub is kept updated,” BT explained.
“Constantly switching off the hub makes the line look unstable, meaning that your speed may be automatically reduced to improve the reliability of your broadband connection.”
Next, it’s a good idea to make sure your devices are free from bugs or viruses, as this can also affect speeds.
“If your computer has picked up a virus it can slow everything down,” BT added.
There are plenty of virus protections on the market and BT also offers a free service called “BT Web Protect” which should help to keep things safe.
Finally, check the position of your router and make sure the signal is not being blocked.
“Your wireless set-up has a big impact on broadband speed, so by improving your set-up you can enjoy faster broadband.
“Try and place your Hub close to where you’ll use the internet most. Obstacles like walls, doors and wardrobes can make a huge difference to WiFi speed.”
