Residents with wheelie bins are being cautioned over potential fines as the UK is set to be hit by further storms. The has cautioned that Storm Herminia could lead to wind and heavy rain across large parts of the country this week.
The windy conditions typical of storms can hurl wheelie bins into the streets, creating not just litter but risking damage to vehicles and properties. Mark Hall from has said if this happens to your bin, you may “find yourself out of pocket”.
Mark advised: “Not all insurers will pay out for damage caused by bins if you haven’t made a reasonable attempt to secure them. You could even find yourself out of pocket, or incurring a fine from the council for littering or causing an obstruction.”
He recommends bin locks that can snugly attach bins to walls or posts. Lock straps for wheelie bins can also help prevent waste spillage by keeping lids closed during tumultuous weather.
There are a variety of ways to secure your wheelie bin
As an alternative, Mark advises securing bins using hooks or wall posts, then employing a bungee cord to strap it around the bin or handles, which makes for an effective makeshift solution. He said: “This is a good DIY alternative if you don’t have a lock”.
Another method to secure your bins during stormy weather is by positioning them close together. Tying the bins together can reduce the chance of them being knocked over by strong winds. However, remember to untie them before emptying.
If the above solutions are not feasible, consider placing bricks or rocks at the base of your wheelie bin to enhance its stability in windy conditions. Ensure these weights are placed beside the bin and not inside it, as this could pose a safety risk.
