The key thing to getting your extractor fan looking fresh is using an everyday toothbrush.

It’s important to note that AEG recommends turning off the extractor fan at the mains and, if it’s connected to a light switch, to turn that off too, in order to prevent any accidents.

The suggests that the first straightforward step is removing the cover with a screwdriver and setting it aside before hoovering the fan to remove any loose dust or dirt hiding in it.

It then states: “Fill a basin or sink with warm water and add a few drops of dish soap or a mild degreaser. Place the extractor fan cover in the water and let it soak for at least 15-20 minutes. This helps loosen built-up grease and grime.”

Once soaked, use a toothbrush to scrub the cover and be sure to get into any corners and crevices where dirt sits before rinsing thoroughly with some clean water and leaving it to dry.

The cleaning service then recommends dampening a cloth or paper towel using warm water and washing up liquid to wipe down the interior of the fan. This makes sure all the remaining dirt is gone for good.

Be sure to reattach the cover of your extractor fan once the cleaning is complete and to check that any loose screws are tightened.

AEG suggests: “Regular cleaning is recommended every 2-3 months, but the frequency may vary depending on your cooking habits. If you cook frequently with high-heat methods or use a lot of oils, more frequent cleaning may be necessary.”
