Come Dine With Me returned to on Monday (January 27) for its highly anticipated 20th-anniversary series, but some viewers were ready to switch off just minutes in.
The beloved dinner party competition, hosted by David Lamb, pits four strangers against one another as they vie for the title of ultimate dinner party host, scoring each other out of 10. Known for its unforgettable moments and loyal fan base, the show has been a staple of British television for two decades.
However, fans were threatening to switch off during the latest episode, slamming the new lineup of contestants. Many took to social media, branding the participants as “attention-seeking whoppers” and “layabouts.”
Based in Cambridge, the episode welcomed an eclectic mix of dinner party hopefuls. Hostess Rebecca threw open her doors to personality Josh, mushroom farm owner Mark, wellness retreat guru Nikki, and employee benefit collector Kate.

However, it wasn’t long before viewers took to social media to share their opinions on the show’s lineup. star Josh, a self-proclaimed influencer, raised eyebrows, with some fans criticizing the network for adding what they saw as a stereotypical “social media star” to the fold.
Adding fuel to the fire was Kate, whose bold confession about seeking a wealthy husband sparked outrage online. Viewers wasted no time in airing their frustrations on social media. One fan sarcastically asked: “Who took a punt with this lot?”
Another quipped: “Giving this a go even though I haven’t liked it in ages. Too many attention-seeking whoppers,” to which a fellow viewer responded: “Sad to say there is a few already. Knew there would be.”
Criticism didn’t stop there, with one commenter slamming the lineup: “A f*****g TikToker. Not a promising start.”

“What an awful show this has become. I’m out,” declared a disgruntled fan, while another predicted: “It is going to be a long week with that lot of attention seekers.”
Rebecca served up a delicious dish of braised beef cheeks and dauphinoise potatoes which went down well with the other guests, bagging her a score of 32 out of 40.
Some fans praised the player’s food, and welcomed the return of the show, gushing: “This all looks good tbf. Yum.” Another penned: “This Woman’s menu sounds amazing!!!! So glad it’s back!”
