A new metro network is expected to transform Bahrain
is poised for a transportation revolution with the launch of a £1.6 billion Bahrain Metro, the nation’s first light rail transit system.
This ambitious megaproject is a key pillar of Bahrain’s Economic Vision 2030, as it aims to deliver an integrated, sustainable, and efficient solution for the country’s growing population and urban demands.
The will span 109 kilometres of rail, with 30 kilometres elevated, offering seamless connectivity across key residential, commercial, administrative, and leisure districts.

The Bahrain Metro is designed to address critical urban challenges, including traffic congestion and environmental degradation.
By introducing an eco-friendly, automated electric train service, the project aims to reduce reliance on private vehicles, significantly cut carbon emissions, and promote a cleaner, greener urban environment.
The Bahrain Ministry of Transportation and Telecommunication (MTT) is spearheading the project with the support of IDOM, a leading consultancy firm, which conducted the feasibility study and phase one design.
The metro’s long-term vision includes integration with the Gulf Railway Network, which will enhance Bahrain’s connectivity with neighbouring countries across the Arabian Peninsula.
Phase one of the Bahrain Metro is expected to open in 2025, marking a significant milestone in the nation’s journey towards sustainable urban development.
With a capacity to accommodate up to 200,000 passengers daily, the metro will set a new benchmark for public transportation in the region.
