Zach Johnson’s caddie Damon Green roared back at heckling fans after the former captain was hounded over the USA’s defeat.
Johnson was named USA skipper for the last Ryder Cup, to Team Europe back in 2023 at the Marco Simone Country Club in Rome, Italy.
Even some 15 months on from the tournament, it appears one golf fan still hasn’t forgiven him for that loss – and they made their feelings clear in an unsavoury incident.
Johnson had played at the 2025 Farmers Insurance Open this week in California, where the 48-year-old finished T48th.
It’s fair to say the veteran American wasn’t at his best, concluding the tournament with an overall score of four-over-par at the PGA Tour event.
As he walked in between holes, Johnson and his caddie Green were confronted by an angry fan, who called out his decision to pick Justin Thomas and Sam Burns in the USA team.
“We lost the Ryder Cup because of you!” the fan shouted from the sidelines as Johnson walked past.
His comments did not go down well with Green, who walked over and said: “What did you say? You got a problem? You got a problem with [Johnson]…”

The fan interrupted and replied: “Yeah… with [his decision to pick] Sam Burns and Justin Thomas.”
The caddie continued: “Well then go talk to them. Just shut up, don’t be a d***.” As he went to walk away, he turned to the fan and flashed a smile as he muttered: “Yeah, cool. Exactly.”
Johnson has previously spoken about his regrets after the USA’s defeat, which was widely criticised by former players and pundits in the golf world, and he admitted that he only realised the error of his ways when reflecting on his decisions.
“I’ve got a lot of 20/20-hindsight things that I certainly think about. Arguably, some regrets,” Johnson said back in 2023.

“But I think again something of that magnitude, win or lose, you’re going to have that, that’s sports. And I think that’s when you care, you’re passionate about something, you’re going to have those natural feelings.
He added: “You’re looking back on things, if I could have put more value into time management, I could have put my guys in a better position to play golf at a better rate early on.
“I’m not suggesting that would have changed the outcome, not at all. I can’t determine that, that’s sports, right? So I’m just saying that in my seat, I didn’t see what needed to be seen until after the fact.”
Johnson has been replaced as USA captain by Keegan Bradley for the next Ryder Cup, which is due to take place at Bethpage in New York from September 26-28 this year.
