RCMP bust illegal street racing in Langley involving ‘unruly’ crowd of about 200

RCMP allege a teenager rushed at police so they deployed a Taser. The 16-year-old boy is facing multiple charges.

A teenager faces several charges after allegedly obstructing police officers trying to stop an illegal street race on Friday night in Langley.

Langley RCMP arrived to a motor vehicle incident near Gloucester Way at about 11 p.m. There were about 200 young people participating in illegal street racing and stunting.

RCMP were issuing several traffic violation tickets and having a vehicle towed when the crowd “became unruly.”

Backup support was requested as a 16-year-old boy allegedly obstructed officers. Despite multiple instructions to stand down, the teen rushed at officers, who were forced to deploy a Taser.

A few bystanders also interfered with the arrest of the youth, RCMP said.

After repeated requests for people to stand back were ignored, officers deployed pepper spray to disperse them and make an arrest.

The youth was arrested and placed inside a police vehicle, but some onlookers released the suspect from the car.

The youth was located using police dogs. The youth is now facing several charges, including assault.

Langley RCMP Superintendent Harm Dosange called the behaviour “deeply troubling” and said patrols will be increased.

“Street racers put the public and police at significant risk,” he said in a statement Saturday.

Investigators are reviewing video and there could be more arrests.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Langley RCMP at 604-532-3252.
