Madison Keys declared “the sky’s the limit” for the rest of her career after finally winning her first Grand Slam a month before her 30th birthday.

The new world No.7 was hailed as a future superstar when she won her maiden WTA Tour match at age 14.

But the 2017 US Open runner-up could not convert her potential into a Major title until beating world No.1 6-3 2-6 7-5 to claim the .

Keys, 29, joined Jennifer Capriati (2001) and Caroline Wozniacki (2018) in winning her first Grand Slam Down Under after years of trying. Her fellow American teenage star went on to win the French Open that year and retained the title in Melbourne

Keys, whose power hitting is suited to the grass in , said: “I have always wanted to win every single tournament I have ever been in a draw of, so I think that is going to continue to be the goal. I think now the sky’s the limit and we just keep working towards the next title.”

The No.19 seed spoke openly about her years of struggling with the internal and external pressure of expectation – and how “lots of therapy” had helped her realise: “No-one is going to love me more or less if I don’t win one.”

She added: “I honestly think that had I not done that, then I wouldn’t be sitting here. The stigma around therapy in general, not just in sports, I think is slowly starting to go away.

“I think that everyone should be in therapy, no matter whatI think it helps. I think no matter what, no matter what’s going on in your life, you’re going to have moments where things are tough and you need someone to talk to. I think it’s very important. It’s something I will continue to do for the rest of my life.”

Keys also gave credit to “big softie” Bjorn Fratangelo who took over as her coach in 2023 before the couple got married in November.

“That was still the best weekend of my life,” she laughed.

No.1 seeds Taylor Townsend and Katerina Siniakova beat Hsieh Su-Wei and Jelena Ostapenko 6-2 6-7 6-3 in the women’s doubles final. New men’s doubles champion Henry Patten and his Finnish partner Harri Heliovaara celebrated their late-night win with a “double cheeseburger meal” at 3.30am before heading to the airport.
