has shut down questions as to whether or not she will retire in a new interview.

She sat down with PA news at the end of her two-day visit to asked whether she would ever consider retirement.

Anne, who is famously and carrying out the most engagements each year, gave a blunt five-word reply to the question. She said: “It isn’t really an option.”

The princess, 74, commented: “It really isn’t written in, no. It isn’t really an option, no, I don’t think so.

“You’re jolly lucky… if you can continue to be more or less compos mentis and last summer I was very close to not being. Take each day as it comes, they say.”

The question about retirement comes after the royal had to take a brief time away from royal duty last year after being involved in an accident.

Anne was said to have been walking on her Gloucestershire estate to go and see the chickens when on June 23, with the Princess Royal remembering nothing about the incident.

The princess was treated in Southmead Hospital in Bristol for concussion and minor head injuries. She stayed in the hospital for five nights.

Despite the accident, Anne was still dubbed the most hardworking royal last year, having completed the most royal engagements last year.
