Graham Norton’s strict rule for BBC chat show guests that everyone must follow

Much-loved chat show host previously opened up on an unknown “rule” that he follows while presenting his self-titled programme. The 61-year-old sits at the helm of as he welcomes on star-studded line ups.

Graham gets up close and personal with various celebrities as he invites them to join him on his iconic sofa. However, he has admitted that once the cameras stop rolling, so does his time with the guests.

Speaking to The Telegraph about a day in his life, the chat show host admitted: “I don’t go out with guests from my show as a rule. I don’t mean that in a rude way – it’s just we all have our own friends.”

He added: “One dinner did happen with Stanley Tucci, Miriam Margolyes and . It was lovely and we all said, ‘Oh, we must do this again,’ but never did.”

Graham also previously shared a rule that he set for himself involving alcohol. He said: “More than 30 years later, I still allow myself only one glass of wine on my chat show.

“Most weeks it never comes close to being finished and even back in the early Nineties, when I had drifted into stand-up comedy, doing the rounds in the pubs and clubs, I kept to the one-glass rule.”

Sometimes the celebrity guests appear to be in somewhat of a merry mood, with viewers believing that they are encouraged to drink during their appearance on the show.

However, Graham hit back at the claims stating that it is absolutely not the case. Speaking to , he explained: “A lot of people think we try to get our guests drunk and we really don’t.”

He shared that the show does offer the celebs a drink so they can have some fun or to calm their nerves – but there is a limit as the actually has a strict rule for alcohol.

“There is a drink waiting for them out there if they want it, but the most you can really have is two or three drinks, tops.

“If you want to be drunk – and clearly some people do – you’ve got to arrive pre-liquored,” Graham explained.

He also admitted that it can be “hard work” when the guests have had a bit too much to drink. He shared: “Those nights are quite hard work where you’re just trying to keep it together and get to the finishing line.”
