Emergency services swarm residential area as bomb squad investigates grenade scare

Bomb disposal experts and emergency services have been dispatched to Gorton, Manchester, after a suspected grenade was discovered, sparking fear among locals.

Abbey Hey Lane was quickly cordoned off as police and fire brigades rushed to the scene, with a technical rescue unit also in attendance.

An onlooker reported witnessing “lots of police” and a “bomb squad” converging on the area, noting the arrival of larger fire engines too.

A representative for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) confirmed: “At around 5.15pm on Saturday 25 January, fire crews were called to assist with an incident on Abbey Hey Lane, Manchester.

“Fire engines from Philips Park and Gorton stations, as well as the technical rescue unit from Ashton, were quickly mobilised to the scene.

“Fire crews remain at the scene, working alongside Greater Manchester Police and the Explosive Ordnance Disposal team to make the area safe.”

Greater Manchester Police informed the Manchester Evening News: “We are in attendance to reports of a grenade found on Abbey Hey Lane, Manchester.”, reports .

They continued, stating: “A cordon is in place and residents within it have been advised to stay indoors away from doors and windows, whilst specialists ensure the safety of all those in the local area.”

However, witnesses later told  that the scare was a false alarm.

By 7.30pm, the cordon had been removed, and emergency services had vacated the area.
